It looks like the system doesn't have any power management included. is there a way to change that which I'm not aware of? is it possible to allow the Pi to go to sleep but have the radio still functioning and "catch up" later?

It's not the prettiest, but it's possible. If you shutdown -h now the system halts, the Pi shuts down but the GPIO port continues to power the meshtastic radio. There is a button on the side (underneath the kickstand) which you need to reach in and press. When you do, the Pi comes back online. During the time the Pi is off, if you have S&F configured on your meshtastic radio, then messages should be received and stored.
On a broader point re power management, unfortunately the Pi isn't very good at power management, but this approach above can probably be made a bit more elegant... and we will try to do that by incorporating a more easily pressable button in future designs.
@TX Programmer there are three buttons under the kickstand, one for backlight and two for volume - does it matter which one?
It's the one depicted in the image below. The white button on the pi motherboard.
