Building things... in the US

  • I wanted to get your general thoughts on a topic that's really important to us at SpecFive. Designing and building real things in the US... again.

Yes, I know not 100% of what we build is built in the US. Yes, the chips are manufactured in China. But we ARE trying to do a lot of the work here. The design, prototyping, enclosures, assembly, testing and a lot of the software. I personally don't think we'll ever be able to do everything 100% domestically because the soup to nuts supply chain just can't be replicated at the push of a button. And it's not like we are looking to undermine or be negative about others building things elsewhere, but a lot of US companies have essentially just become marketing companies with no real design and development happening here. That means less opportunities for our college graduates to learn by doing. So, for these reasons alone, it is important that we retain engineering jobs and capacity to some degree.

SpecFive is a Texas based company with engineers at its core. We are trying to do more domestically than most companies do or would consider doing. Yes, it's more expensive. Yes, getting everything built in Shenzhen and dropshipping would be cheaper. But then we wouldn't have engineers or engineering opportunities in the US. I hope that means something to our community.
