Is this unit voice capable?
The hardware does have audio capabilities but the meshtastic firmware in use on the device does not support this. So today you wouldn't get out of the box audio capabilities with the Ranger.
We are working on a number of voice integrated solutions, so please stay tuned.
In the meanwhile, our NOMAD device offers the ability to run a variety of voip linux apps on the device while still offering LoRa/Meshtastic connectivity.
Does Spectre have audio capability through Meshtastic? I see that it does 2G, which is essentially voice and text only, right? Of course, recipient meshtastic units would need speech-to-text, and that could be supplied by a server Meshtastic device. Requires additional core and module support to get that, unless the source has the processing capability on board to 'make text.'
I don't have mine yet but I like being able to use the voice option on the android keyboard with my heltec BT tethered to my phone. I hope the Ranger can do that or that these self contained options can do this in the future
Ranger does not use Android. But Spectre does.
@Meghan The Android STT works great for sending messages and it wouldn't take much to spin up a TTS to integrate into a mesh app but make sure it is disabled on public channels otherwise it won't stop talking.
That's a great point. STT is a game-changer for fast messaging in the field, and TTS is perfect for hands-free tracking. You're spot on about channel management, though, TTS on a busy public channel would be absolute chaos. It’s definitely a feature worth exploring for private channels, accessibility, and tactical mobile use cases.
