Upgraded RF performance, expanded memory, and proven Trekker form factor for demanding off-grid deployments
AUSTIN, TX, UNITED STATES: SpecFive LLC announces the Trekker Kilo, a compact handheld mesh radio with integrated GPS, built for off-grid communication, position sharing, and long-range mesh networking. Trekker Kilo delivers stronger RF output and more processing headroom while keeping the same rugged form factor teams already trust across the Trekker line.
"The Trekker Kilo is about squeezing real range and reliability into a device you can clip to your belt and forget about," said Amir Husain, Founder of SpecFive. "Teams operating off-grid don't want to learn a new device every season. They want more power, more memory, and the same mounts and accessories they already carry."
"We moved to the ESP32-S3R2 with 2 MB of PSRAM and 16 MB of flash, and pushed transmit power up to 28 dBm," said Daniel Susca, VP of Engineering at SpecFive. "That gives the Trekker Kilo better range between nodes, stronger performance in dense environments, and enough headroom for advanced firmware features and future updates."
Highlights
The Trekker Kilo transmits at up to 28 dBm for longer range and more reliable mesh links, powered by an ESP32-S3R2 dual-core MCU with 2 MB PSRAM and 16 MB of external flash. It pairs an SX1262 long-range LoRa transceiver with a 17 cm, 10 dBi flexible antenna and includes a multi-constellation GNSS receiver for accurate position sharing. A 2500 mAh battery delivers 8 hours of active use and up to 24 hours on standby, with USB-C handling both charging and data. The Kilo shares the same enclosure, belt clip, antenna connection, and accessory compatibility as the rest of the Trekker line, and supports Meshtastic, MeshCore, and ATAK firmware.
Who It's For
The Trekker Kilo is built for search and rescue teams operating beyond cellular coverage, outdoor expeditions, hikers, and overlanders, as well as tactical training units and event coordinators. It is equally suited to emergency response crews working when infrastructure is down and industrial or remote operations requiring reliable off-grid communications.
Specs at a Glance
The Trekker Kilo measures 50 × 140 × 40 mm and weighs 165 g, with a PETG case. It runs on an ESP32-S3R2 MCU with 2 MB PSRAM and 16 MB flash, using an SX1262 LoRa chip at 915 MHz with up to 28 dBm output. The device ships with a 17 cm 10 dBi flexible LoRa antenna and a GPS ceramic antenna, with an expected range of approximately 3–5 miles in urban environments and 5–15 miles in rural ones. Power comes from a single 18650 cell rated at 2500 mAh, charged via USB-C at 5V. Supported firmware includes Meshtastic, ATAK, and MeshCore.
Pricing and Availability
The Trekker Kilo is priced at $129.99 USD and ships with the device, a 17 cm 10 dBi flexible antenna, and a USB-C charging cable.
