Two-Way Radio Text Messaging: How LoRa Mesh Networks Keep You Connected Off-Grid

There are job sites, farms and trails that a cell tower will not cover. Two-way radio text messaging is made for such a void. The technology eschews the need for a carrier signal in favour of small radios to put short messages from one device to another or have them relayed through a network of nodes.  

You will find it functioning in canyons or deep in the woods where a phone has no bars at all. At its core is lora mesh communication, a low-power form of radio suited to long range while being easy on the battery. Hikers, off-roaders, emergency personnel and farmers make use of it to keep in contact with no subscription required; and the hardware is much cheaper in the long run than a satellite phone.

What Is Two-Way Radio Text Messaging? 

With two-way radio text messaging, short messages are exchanged between a pair of devices or more. The medium is the radio wave, not the cell network. Mesh LoRa is the technology at the heart of two-way radio text messaging in most systems. A form of radio modulation, LoRa (for Long Range) will sacrifice some bandwidth to put more distance between points. The signals get by on a minimum of power and yet cover considerable ground; with conditions being favourable one can expect a handheld unit to make contact over a few miles. 

Mesh LoRa Networks Explained 

There is no central tower that a mesh network has to rely on. The arrangement is such that any given device or node will relay its messages on to the next one. Should a node drop offline, the radio network is not put out of action; it will continue to function with the messages taking an alternate route.  

For teams operating in terrain that is constantly shifting, this kind of redundancy is what makes a mesh network a dependable option. 

Meshtastic Devices and How They Send Messages 

A smartphone app is used to pair with the Meshtastic device via Bluetooth, though after one has put the network in place the phone is hardly necessary. The devices will put out small text packets for any node in the vicinity to receive and pass along; the size of the packet means a charge can last days. 

It is not uncommon to see people on the hunt for a Meshtastic device to buy once they grasp what a $30 radio can do. Small packets carry a real advantage: because LoRa trades speed for sensitivity, a tiny text message can travel much farther on the same power than a voice signal ever could. That is not a fair fight against a standard FRS or GMRS walkie-talkie, since voice and short data packets are different jobs with different tradeoffs. But for pushing a text message or a GPS ping across long, obstructed terrain, LoRa's link budget is hard to beat. 

Why Range and Terrain Matter 

What gives a mesh network its range is as much the terrain as it is the specifications of the device. An open, flat expanse will carry a signal a good deal further than one would get in an urban block or through thick woods. Hills and structures have a way of bouncing or taking in LoRa waves and so curtail the range.  

One finds that a couple of nodes placed on a ridge can do better work than ten put together in a valley for that reason. In the end, elevation is what dictates the distance of a message, not raw power. 

Setting Up Your First Two-Way Radio Text Messaging Network 

For the most part, getting underway is not as involved as one might think.  

  • To begin, unbox a pair of compatible radios and put them on to charge.  
  • After that, use Bluetooth to make a connection between each radio and the corresponding app on your smartphone.  
  • You will want to assign an encryption key and a channel name in common so that the group are the only ones who can see what is being sent.  
  • A test message after you have put some distance between you will serve to verify the link. 

With those fundamentals in place, introduce a third node to put multi-hop routing to the test; it is a good way to see how the network handles messages being relayed as opposed to going straight from one point to another.  

Make note of the outcome and if needed reposition the antennas for more coverage. There is no need for much in the way of adjustment, yet even a few feet of elevation on an antenna will do wonders for range.

Battery Life and Power Planning 

One will see some variation in battery life from one device to the next, yet with moderate use the majority of Meshtastic hardware will run for two to five days. The figure can be pushed higher still by turning down the screen and lengthening the interval between messages.  

In a semi-permanent installation, it is common to couple a node to a small solar panel so as not to have to worry about charging. Fleet and ranch operators tend to plan their power budgets with this in mind; after all, a dead node means a hole in the coverage. 

Frequency Bands and Legal Considerations 

The frequency bands for LoRa radios are unlicensed and will differ depending on where you are. In North America one finds 915 MHz, as opposed to the 868 MHz standard in Europe. It is therefore important to verify that any equipment you are considering is suited to your region’s approved band prior to purchase; an incorrect frequency is liable to create interference or put you in breach of local rules.  

A good seller will have the proper band information in plain sight on the product page, so be sure to look it over before you complete your order.

Meshtastic Drone Communication 

It is becoming common for drone operators to put Meshtastic in place with a ground station to handle telemetry and status reporting. The arrangement extends well past what one would get from a conventional radio control link.  

With a light node on the drone to relay position information over the mesh, the system is well suited to agricultural surveying or mapping work where the craft is at a considerable distance from the operator, as well as for search missions. 

Two-Way Radio Text Messaging vs. Traditional Cell Networks 

There is no denying the speed and convenience of cell networks, yet they are of no use once you are out of range. Two-way radio text messaging is a way around that, as it does not rely on cell towers at all. That is an important distinction for anyone in the field, be it backpacking or hunting, who wants a GPS tracker independent of cell service. 

The same LoRa technology underpins an off-grid dog tracker that will serve a pet owner well, putting in a location report from the heart of the woods if need be. Sailors and researchers working in remote areas can pair a GPS receiver with mesh radios. GPS satellites supply the location fix, while the LoRa mesh network carries that data between devices on the ground. There is no mobile signal to be had, but the combination handles positioning and short-range communication without cell towers.

MeshCore vs. Meshtastic: Choosing the Right Protocol 

A fair comparison of MeshCore and Meshtastic shows the LoRa hardware is much the same. The software is where they part ways. Meshtastic uses managed flood routing, every node relays every packet up to a hop limit of 7. This favors easy onboarding and ad-hoc community networks. 

MeshCore separates device roles instead. Companion nodes carry messages but don't relay; dedicated repeaters handle that using learned, directed routing rather than flooding. These cuts wasted airtime, improves repeater battery life, and supports up to roughly 64 hops. Consequently, MeshCore scales better for dense networks, while Meshtastic's simplicity still suits casual, ad-hoc use. 

One cannot say either is the clear winner. There is more third-party app support and a bigger following for Meshtastic. Then again, those with requirements may find the streamlined protocol of MeshCore more to their liking. A construction worker or someone heading into the backcountry will look for a unit that can take a beating from the rain and occasional drop. For everyday use, a slimmer radio that fits in the pocket is more to some people’s liking.

Group Coordination and Team Channels 

It is not uncommon for teams on a large property to establish distinct channels for their various groups. It is not uncommon for those new to the system to put nodes in a spot that is too low, say in a vehicle cabin or inside a backpack, only to have metal impede the signal.  

Antennas should be mounted as high and unobstructed as one can make them.

And do not crowd a channel with excessive chatter. It is a common error that has the effect of slowing down message delivery for the entire mesh.

Does two-way radio text messaging require a license?  

Most consumer LoRa gear does not require a license by virtue of running on unlicensed bands. That said, one should make a point of checking local regulations prior to any travel, international. 

How far can messages travel?  

As for range, that is a matter of terrain and how high the antenna is placed. You might get several miles between nodes in an open field but expect less in a city or through woods. 

Can I send messages without a smartphone?
