It is the kind of flexibility that has seen their popularity rise; a hiking club might link up nodes for the length of a trail, or a neighborhood association can put in place a modest network of its own to see them through storm season. 

Meshtastic Devices Explained 

There are few open-source options for off-grid messaging as widely used as Meshtastic. At the heart of these devices is LoRa, or Long Range, radio technology. Because a LoRa signal can cover more ground than one would expect from ordinary Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and does so with minimal power draw, it is well suited to portable equipment that runs on a battery. 

To operate them, one simply pairs the hardware with an app on a smartphone via Bluetooth. The phone then serves as the interface for composing and dispatching brief text messages in the absence of any cellular coverage. All the while, the actual work of radio transmission and mesh relaying is left to the device itself.

Many Meshtastic devices feature built-in GPS for sharing locations on a map, though models without GPS can still broadcast a location using paired phone data or fixed coordinates.
